2010 Stimulus Check

Written by admin on January 30th, 2010

At this time there has been no plans to have a 2010 stimulus check.  In the last few months there have some talks from Obama and other people in congress that there might be a stimulus check in 2010.

If there were to be a stimulus check this year in 2010 it would be similar to the 2009 stimulus check.  The 2009 stimulus check involved sending out $250 checks to everyone that was retired as of Jan 1, 2009 and a few other retired groups.  If you were to get a check it would have come between April 2009 and June 2009.

Those that are currently employed still have a tax cut in effect that started last year as part of the 2009 stimulus check. Last year everyone saw a ~$20 extra amount on each pay check as a result of this tax cut.  In 2010 as part of the stimulus check that amount is $12-$15 per pay check.  It is lower in 2010 because it was only active during part of 2009.

2009 Stimulus Check

The 2009 stimulus check was a program started by President Obama under the 2009 stimulus act to help encourage Americans to spend more and to help with the recent downturn in the global economy.

There were multiple parts of the Stimulus Check 2009, broken into the 3 main groups of people.  Those that were employed, unemployed and retired.

Those employed received tax benefits that made there weekly paychecks about $20/week more, totaling $400 over the course of the year.  Based on comments I’ve seen and people I’ve talked to, people would have rather had a $400 Stimulus Check similar to the $600 stimulus check sent out in 2008 under the Bush Administration.

Those that are retired and on social security, military veterans and those who used to work for the rail roads received a $250 stimulus check in the summer of 2009.  These checks were sent out automatically and you didn’t have to do anything to sign up or qualify.  Either you got a stimulus check 2009 or you didn’t.

Those that got the checks were thankful, those that didn’t wondered where theirs was.

Stimulus Check

During the last few years everyone has heard about stimulus checks and how they are basically free money from the government.  The original intent of the stimulus check back in 2008 was to help stimulate the economy to encourage Americans to go out and spend money to get the economy going to keep us from going into a recession.  That was the idea anyways behind President Bush’s plans.  Did it actually work, that is debatable.  What did do is put about a $600 stimulus check in the hands of every man woman and child in America.  Checks were sent out based on the last two digits of their SSN number.

Fast forward to 2009, President Obama is new in office, comes up with a plan to help stimulate the economy in his own way.  $250 stimulus checks for those on social security, veterans and rail road retirees.  Those working get a weekly tax credit that over the coarse of the year totals $400 a person.  Those on unemployment got their own benefits like extended benefits and partially paid for COBRA.

Everyone is curious what President Obama will do with the 2009 stimulus act and how that will impact any possible Stimulus Check 2010.

There are an estimated 2 million people in the United States that could be eligible for a veterans stimulus check in 2010.  President Obama is trying to persuade congress to authorize the $13 Billion funds needed to send checks out to everyone that should receive one.
This plan would be only for those livig in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam, and those on social security would also be eligable as well.
These additional funds would be helpful for those on a limited budget at this time in the current economic situation.
Senior Administration hasn’t commented yet on when or if this check would be going out or issued.  Regardless President Obama has said that this would not hurt those on Social Security if it was issued.

Do You Have To Claim Your 2009 Stimulus Check You Received In 2009?

If you received a $250 2009 stimulus check during the spring/summer of 2009 as part of the stimulus package you do not need to claim it when you file your taxes in April 2010.  This is considered free money from the government to help stimulate the economy.
Those that were working during 2009 year the tax credit that netted you an extra $600 over the course of the year is already taken out of your taxes.  Those that were on unemployment, when you file taxes the proper taxes will be taken out.
